All ya’ll guys and gals who fancy to hear some grade-A Americana music ought to mosey on down to the LIC Bar for their monthly Barn Dance. The best thing is partner, you won’t have to hit the trail out west and dance in a real barn with animals.

What’s that you say, pilgrim? You don’t know what Americana music is? Well, it’s just the darndest music to prickle your ears. It’s good ol’ American music that combines the sounds of country, folk, rhythm and blues and rock ’n’ roll. Some musicians that have played this type of music include Johnny Cash and Arlo Guthrie. However, you have to pay a fistful of dollars to buy one of their CDs. At the Barn Dance, you can see established musicians playing some tunes of the genre at a bargain price — free!
Many city folk don’t take kindly to music that sounds country. Don’t let that scare you to the hills. With all the blending of musical styles, you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy.

The two fine people who started the Barn Dance are Gus Rodriguez, the LIC Bar’s events coordinator, and Liz Cousins. Cousins said she wanted to bring great Americana to LIC and thought the LIC Bar was a great venue. She also said the music at the Barn Dance is unlike anything played on the radio. “You get something that’s not force fed,” she said. “It’s something different.”

D.B. Rielly and his band opened the inaugural Barn Dance on Nov. 8. Rielly said he had played music for “as long as he can remember.” Among the musicians he’s jammed with are such greats as B.B. King, Paul Shaffer and Chubby Checker. Rielly said that even first timers are likely to enjoy the event. “It’s a warm, friendly place,” he said. “The people are just nice.” Even those unfamilar with Americana will fast become fans of this type of music. “You will be infected by the hillbilly bug,” he said.

Other musicians who played at the Barn Dance’s first event were guitarist Rick Snell and Rodriguez, who strapped on his own six string when another performer couldn’t make the show.

Once a band gets started, Cousins and Rodriguez want the audience to feel free to clap their hands and move to the beat. If you can find room, start a little hoedown with your friends, family and other patrons.

At the Barn Dance there won’t be any of the pop country that occasionally makes it to the radio. The artists that play aren’t signed to big-name labels.”It’s unknown, unsigned musicians,” Cousins said. “There’s a lot of great talent.”

So make sure you put on your cowboy hat, get on your horse (translation: in your car), saddle up the young’uns and the missus and enjoy some free food and music. You’ll have a hog-killin’ time (translation: lots of fun).
